I put this article in this blog as an alternative to the original article in my Medium blog, so check this out!

The era of the metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI) has arrived, bringing several rapid changes in human life. This technology offers many conveniences and benefits, from communication, business, and entertainment to education. However, behind all this progress, there is anxiety felt by many ordinary people regarding its impact on the values of humanism that exist in our lives.

One prominent unrest ordinary people feel is the loss of real social interaction. In the metaverse era, we can easily interact, communicate, and even live a social life in the virtual world. However, these interactions only partially replace the warmth, closeness, and depth of social interactions in the real world.

Moreover, increasing dependence on the virtual world can isolate someone from their social environment. This can affect the balance of one’s life and mental health and erode the values of humanism that we uphold so far.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence, or AI, is increasingly used in various fields, including job automation. While AI can improve efficiency and productivity, many ordinary people are worried about losing their jobs to being replaced by machines. Losing a position takes a toll on an individual’s economy and can lead to a crisis of identity, self-esteem, and feelings of uselessness.

“This metaverse is going to be far more pervasive and powerful than anything else. If one central company gains control of this, they will become more powerful than any government and be a god on Earth.”

Tim Sweeney, Epic Games

On the other hand, personal data has also become a precious commodity in the metaverse and AI era. However, many ordinary people are concerned about the possible misuse of their data. In addition, increasingly sophisticated AI can be used to manipulate information and public opinion, thereby influencing individual perspectives and freedom of thought.

Facing this anxiety, we must realize the importance of maintaining humanist values in our lives through several actions consisting of maintaining a balance between the real and virtual worlds to maintain the quality of our social interactions.

Second, dare to invest in education and training to equip individuals with the skills needed in this digital era. This will help ordinary people compete in a job market increasingly dominated by AI technology and the metaverse.

Third, the government needs to present strong and effective regulations to protect people’s data and prevent misuse of data and manipulation of information by irresponsible parties.

Fifth, AI developers and users must commit to developing and using AI ethically, considering its impact on individuals and society.

Last, actively encourage dialogue between experts to create solutions that combine artificial intelligence and humanist values. This will help ensure that the technology developed provides economic benefits and supports the quality of human life without eliminating the role of humans themselves.

In the face of this rapid change, we must realize that our greatest strength is our humanity. Therefore, let’s support technological innovations that reinforce humanist values and improve the quality of our lives, not those that undermine them.

We can create an inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial era of metaverse and AI with collaboration and shared responsibility. We can write a new history in humanity’s journey, where technology and humanism complement and empower each other for actual progress. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity with wisdom and responsibility for a better and more humane future.
